What is Fascia?
Fascia is the most prolific tissue in the body. It connects all organs to each other in web of immeasurable interconnections. This means that the body has the ability to easily compensate for inner tensions and still function quite normally. When the web is overstretched then it's ability to compensate is compromised and in it's innate intelligence it will send pain to less important organs like the muscles or joints. However in the majority of cases the muscles and joints are only witnesses to the inner restrictions and so treating them is like turning off a fire alarm and expecting that to put out the fire.
Fascia has the functions to:

What is Fascia Therapy?
Fascia Therapy is an integrated approach to treat the whole body by using the communicative property of the fascia to tell the therapist where the suffering is coming from. This means listening to the body and it's messages. Fascia therapy is a combination of Craniosacral Osteopathy, Barral Institute post-graduate Osteopthic Visceral Manipulation, Myofascial Release Therapy and Barral Institute listening Techniques.
Richard Wickes is a teaching assistant for the Barral Institute and practice group leader. |
How Can Fascia Therapy Help Me?
All health problems will involve the Fascia as a central tissue in the body; Experience with Fascia Therapy has shown that especially:
- Post Operation - ALL operations will cause adhesions and scars. Many of the long term consequences are ignored because they are not located at the point of the operation. You need to wait 8-12 weeks after an operation before any effective Fascia Therapy can be carried out.
- Post Trauma - Trauma by it's nature will often negatively affect internal organs of the body which are more dense, like the kidney, live, heart and duodenum. This often manifests itself as back pain, or joint pain.
- Unexplainable Joint or Muscle pain - If there has been no direct trauma to joints or muscles and there is pain in them then it is possible that the pain is referred from nerves or internal organs which are out of alignment.
- Fatigue - Tighteness of the Fascia can influence the brain and even the toxicity of the body and so releasing fascia restrictions can be very powerful in helping relieve fatigue.
- Headaches and Migraines - Headaches are can often come from an imbalance in the pressure systems of the body. The pressure in the abdominal cavity influence the pressure in the chest cavity and the cranial cavity. Balancing these pressures supports optimal health and often many symptoms disappear on their own.
What to Expect from a Treatment?
When you come to a session you need to wear clothes which allow access to the whole body so tight jeans and heavy clothes are not suitable. Yoga clothes or loose fitting clothes are appropriate. DO NOT come to a treatment immediately after food leave at least an hour and a half before you have a treatment.
The session is divided into three parts: Evaluation, Treatment and Closing
Evaluation is done in standing, sitting and lying. The hands are on the body and gently evaluating the pressures and tensions of the tissues.
The treatment is done in a position which best suits the patient and the body part being treated. This can be in sitting, lying, on all fours etc.
The closing of the treatment involves reevaluating the body and the tissues as well as activating the neural system to recognise the changes and thus support the speedy reintegration.
Cancellations: It's quite normal that we need to cancel sometimes. Cancelations giving less than 24 hours notice need to be paid for. However if for whatever reason we need to cancel on you we won't charge you.

After a Treatment - Detox

You can expect the body to detox, so drink more water. You may feel tired, so rest and eat simple healthy light food.
Rest for a day or two if you are tired.
Avoid heavy stretches for 3-4 days and then continue with your normal routines
